Much of what is produced in Canada has no legislation in place which mandates stringent labelling about our foods' processes, nor does it often even tell you about potential ingredients that may be harmful to you or, at the very least, make the warning abundantly clear. Food scares and health problems due to processed foods are on the rise. People are making wiser choices about what they eat, knowing there's a great deal of merit in the old cliche, "You are what you eat."
Healthy foods seem to have a much higher price tag when, in fact, they should be the foods most cost-accessible to the public at large. The unfortunate reality about the situation in the retail market for organic food in Canada is that 85% of the products are imported from the US, which inflates prices considerably. While factory farming has seen considerable government subsidization, the same could not be said for organic farmers until recently. Organic processes are also more involved, thereby involving more costs, which must then be passed on to the consumer to cover the costs and realize profit.
It is not the intent of Mabou Ridge Centre to change all of this. At least, not overnight. Instead, the Centre wishes to assist in the price-reduction of organic foods to consumers and their families by offering an educational, self-satisfying, and healthy lifestyle choice to those who would not otherwise have the opportunity to participate in their own food creation.
If you wish to share in a community of other organically- and environmentally-minded gardeners, this is a perfect summer project for you.
