Fibre Processing | Preparing Your Fibre

Factors Affecting Fibre for Processing
Because of the considerable upkeep and labour costs in the maintenance of our fibre animals, we all want and need to get the absolute most we can from our fibre. While physical characteristics of fibre from one animal or farm may be similar to that of another, the end results between the two may be very different when processed for a variety of reasons. Care and preparation of the animals prior to shearing is the key to getting good quality fibre.

Some of the major considerations which affect the quality of the end product are: maintenance of the livestock or husbandry, climate, nutrition, and overall health. The value of the fleece is additionally affected by proper sorting and skirting of the fibre, and fibre cleanliness, especially the absence of vegetable matter like sticks, burrs, straw, hay, and manure.

Please also note that fleeces full of excessive vegetable matter, tender or damaged fibres, and/or widely varying staple lengths will produce less-than-favourable results in yarn. Again, proper sorting and skirting will ensure the highest quality.
