Felting
Three- by four-foot sheets of felt can be made from your fibre and at a thickness and firmness you choose. We can also create smaller sheets for you if desired.
Different fibres produce different felts. Fleeces with good crimp felt best and produce a firm, yet soft felt. While long wools felt well, some, like long llama fibre, may appear a bit "fuzzy" and can tend to shed if not cared for appropriately. Mohair is not usually felted on its own for the same reason – it sheds more than all of them – and, instead, is usually blended with wool. Down fleeces produce a very soft felt and require considerably more felting time if any firmness is required.
Blending
Blending for felt can be done at either the picking or carding process, but a more complete blend will be accomplished if done during the picking process. When done at the picking stage, for example, differently-coloured fibres will will have a more complete blend and will appear more heterogeneous. When done at the carding stage, colours appear a little more motled.
We can also combine different fibres to make a unique blend for you. These can be your own or we can provide wool, llama, alpaca, and mohair for blending with yours. Prices vary for the type of fibre.
