Fibre Processing | Preparing Your Fibre Proper Sorting and Skirting Skirting is the process of removing sections of the fleece which are dirty, coarse, contaminated, or, for whatever reason, unusable. Typically, a sheeps fleece will be shorn and removed in one piece and, in larger operations, skirted on a table on the same day. Alpaca fleeces are removed in sections and varying grades of fibres are separated and bagged accordingly. The varying grades of fibre from llama and mohair fleece are also separated, but are not generally removed in one piece. Fleeces full of excessive vegetable matter, tender or damaged fibres, and/or widely varying staple lengths will produce less-than-favourable results in yarn. Again, proper sorting and skirting will ensure the highest quality. Please see detailed skirting instructions for the following: Skirting the Alpaca Fleece Skirting the Llama Fleece Skirting the Mohair Fleece Skirting the Sheep Fleece |
