Mabou Ridge Centre for Holistic Living -- Llama trekking -- Take a llama to lunch!

Llama Trekking | What to Bring

The following guide will help you to enjoy your llama trekking experience:

1. A prepaid voucher or cash is required on the day of the trek. Prepaid vouchers are available for those who wish to buy in advance, or to give a trek to a friend for a gift. Vouchers must be used within 12 months of the date of purchase. Watch the website for opportunities to purchase vouchers for treks at competitive prices. Treks may also be paid for in full, in cash, on the day of the trek.

2. Bookings for treks are always made in advance. It is important to book your trek at least three days in advance. Up to eight people may be on your trek, to share the experience and help to make the day a memorable one for you. On the day, if the weather is uncertain, please call to make sure the trek has not been cancelled. If Mabou Ridge Centre deems it necessary to cancel a trekn because of bad weather, you may choose another day without any loss of a booking fee.

You may cancel your booking up to 24 hours prior to the start of the trek. Up to this time, voucher holders may rebook for another trek. If not cancelled 24 hours before the trek, you are asked to pay 10% of the cost of the missed trip, as it represents a missed opportunity for another person to take your place.

3. All treks are undertaken at your own risk. You will not be riding the llamas, and they do not kick or bite, and so this experience is relatively safe. You are also instructed that it is better to let the llama lead rope go, rather than come to any personal harm, should this very rare occurence happen.

While every precaution is taken to give you a safe and thoroughly enjoyable experience, being with animals does have its surprises. You are therefore asked to read and sign your agreement that the trek is undertaken at your own risk. This means that Mabou Ridge Centre, while it has a responsibility to take every precaution, is not liable for accidents which could not be anticipated.

4. Bring something warm to wear. As with most areas close to the sea, the weather around Mabou can change rapidly. There is nothing more miserable and dangerous for your health, than wearing damp clothes for several hours. An extra sweater and rain gear are both essential items to bring. Gloves and/or a hat may also be needed, at your discretion.

5. Wear sensible shoes. For all treks excepting the walk around Mabou Ridge Centre farm, sturdy hiking or walking boots or shoes are a must. On uneven ground, if your attention is drawn away from watching where you step, you may twist your ankle if you are wearing loose or unlaced shoes. You may also like to pack an extra pair of socks for added protection, or to replace socks which have got wet from walking along a muddy trail. For the llama walk around the farm, running shoes are acceptable. It is never a good idea to walk around with bare feet in beach shoes or thong sandals.

6. Bring your sunscreen. Mabou Ridge Centre is close to the sea and so the air is salty. Often, when the wind blows, it does not feel as if your skin is burning when in fact it is. Please make sure your skin is protected.

7. No dogs allowed. Please do not bring your dog on the trek. You will have a much more enjoyable time if you don't have to watch over your pet, and the llamas will be less jumpy without a dog under their feet. Dogs are also not allowed in any of the animal barns or fields at Mabou Ridge Centre. This policy is to protect young animals, and also to ensure that your pet will not be injured from being kicked.

8. Bring your camera and/or binoculars. You will enjoy looking at and photographing the scenery and the abundant wildlife and plants on the trek, and it will be no problem to store these items in one of the llama packs.

9. Bring drinking water. A water bottle is useful, particularly on the longer trips, when you may get dehydrated from walking in hot or dry weather. You will not need to bring other snacks (feel free, obviously, if you desire), as the Centre provides packed lunches, which include sandwiches, a fruit dessert, and cold drinks. Please see menus.

10. Do not smoke while leading your llama. If you are a smoker, there will be frequent rest stops at which you may smoke. If you try lighting cigarettes on the trail, you may drop your llama’s lead rope or you may drop your lighted match or cigarette butt. It's all too easy to cause a fire in the dry undergrowth of trails.
