Mabou Highlands Lookoff |
The trails through the Cape Mabou Highlands Crown lands make an interesting and challenging days trek. Depending on the makeup of the group, a loop can range from 7 km to 14 km (4 miles to 9 miles).
Red maple and birch trees are on the lower slopes, with sugar maple, yellow birch and American beech trees on the upland plateaux. Bald eagles are often sighted, as well as robins, rose-breasted grosbeaks, black-capped chickadees, fox sparrows, song sparrows, and warblers.
The marginal farmland of the Mabou Highlands was settled by Scots in the mid-nineteenth century, with subsistence agriculture and sheep farming forming much of the economic base, together with the timber trade and mining nearby. Many of these farms were later abandoned and the hills reforested, but cattle are still seen in the community pasture for summer grazing in a large area around South Cape Mountain.
These trails are classified as moderate to difficult. In consideration for both hikers and llamas, only the safest trails are chosen, but even these in places may be steep and uneven. Therefore, sturdy hiking boots or strong shoes are essential for this trip; you will not be permitted to join the trek without them.
A packed meal is provided at midday, and several halts are planned for rest, relaxation, photography and general enjoyment of this beautiful area.
